1973年以降、一貫して「線の音楽」と呼ばれる方法論によって作曲を行ってきた近藤譲。1970年代半ばの２曲、1990年代の1曲、そして21世紀に入ってからの２曲、いずれもライヴ録音で５作品を収録。いずれの作品もCD初出。近藤譲作品を数多く手がけてきたアンサンブル・ノマド、近藤作品の演奏経験豊富なベテラン演奏家と気鋭の若手演奏家の協働による近藤譲70歳記念演奏会アンサンブルの演奏によって、この作曲家の全体像がおぼろげながらも追える構成となっている。

Ensemble NOMAD

1997年、ギタリスト佐藤紀雄の呼びかけによって集まった、無類の個性豊かな演奏家によって結成されたアンサンブル。「NOMAD」（遊牧、漂流）の名にふさわしく、時代やジャンルを超えた幅広いレパートリーを自在に採り上げ、斬新なアイデアやテーマによるプログラムによって独自の世界を表現するアンサンブルとして内外から注目されてきた。2002年度に行った第15回定期演奏会「ケージとメシアンの間で交わす自然と宇宙に関する往復書簡」は大きな反響をよび、サントリー音楽財団「第2回佐治敬三賞」を、2014年度に行った第52回定期演奏会「再生へvol. 3：祈り～エストニアから震災復興を祈るコンサート」により「第3回ウィーン・フィル＆サントリー音楽復興祈念賞」を受賞した。海外からの招待も多く、2000年オランダの「ガウデアムス音楽週間」、2003年ベネズエラで行なわれた「フェスティバル・アテンポ」、2005年11月パリで行われた「フェスティバル・アテンポ」およびイギリスの「ハダースフィールド現代音楽祭」、2007年にはメキシコの「モレリア音楽祭」、また2008年10月にはソウルでの「パン・ムジーク・フェスティヴァル」などに出演。2009年秋には、中国の北京首都師範大学、北京中央音楽学院、四川音楽学院で中国人作品を中心としたプログラムの公演を行ない、好評を博した。2011年には2度目の韓国公演を開催。2013年7月にはエストニアとオランダで公演を開催。2014年にはメキシコの「セルバンティーノ音楽祭」に日本を代表するアンサンブルの1つとして招聘された。2015年12月に再び中国四川公演を行い、2020年には「ライプツィヒ現代音楽祭」にonlineで参加。今後も中国、オランダやフランス、メキシコなどでの公演を予定している。また、近年ではアウトリーチ活動にも積極的に取り組み、保育所、病院、小学校、特別支援学校等で訪問コンサートやワークショップを行なっている。
CDは、これまで近藤譲「梔子」、「空の眺め」、「オリエント・オリエンテーション」、「表面・奥行き・色彩」、石田秀実「神聖な杜の湿り気を運ぶもの」、池辺晋一郎「炎の資格」、福士則夫「花降る森」が発売されている他、藤倉 大の「Turtle Totem」、「Diamond Dust」、「Glorious Clouds」にもライブ録音が収録されている。海外では2011年秋にエベルト・バスケスの「Bestiario（動物寓話集）」、2015年秋に「Pruebas de vida（生命の証）」がリリースされている。2014年にはオリジナル・アルバム「めぐる－Meguru」を発売。2015年夏から秋にかけて発売された「現代中国の作曲家たち」シリーズは、レコード芸術誌の特選盤や朝日新聞の「for your collection」推薦盤に選ばれている。

近藤譲70歳記念演奏会アンサンブル
Jo Kondo 70th Birthday Concert Ensemble

2017年10月31日に東京オペラシティリサイタルホールで行われた演奏会〈近藤譲 七十歳の経路 「線の音楽」の現在・過去・未来〉に出演した15名の演奏家・指揮者（特定の団体名をもたないが、このCD内に限り「近藤譲70歳記念演奏会アンサンブル」という表記を主催者に了承いただいた）。
近藤譲は1973年以降、一貫して「線の音楽」と呼ばれる方法論によって作曲を行ってきた。音や和音を時系列に並べるが、そこでは揺らめくようなリズム法と鮮やかな音色の対比が凝らされ、聴き手を音の迷宮へと誘う。この方法論ゆえに、近藤の作品は演奏が極めて難しく、その作品の質・オリジナリティに比して十分な演奏機会を得ているとはいえない。同演奏会は、こうした状況に一石を投じるべく、近藤の謦咳に接した演奏家、作曲家、批評家により組織された実行委員会が主催したもの。近藤作品の新しい演奏マナーを生みだし、後世へと伝えていくことを目標に、近藤作品の演奏経験豊富なベテランと、気鋭の若手の協働によって作り上げられたコンサートは、「近藤の美学と手法の結びつきを詳らかにする優れた演奏で存在感を示した」と高く評価された。

Ensemble NOMAD

Formed in 1997, Ensemble NOMAD has been highly acclaimed both nationally and internationally as one of the leading ensembles in the world specializing in the 20th-century and contemporary music. Led by Norio Sato (guitarist/conductor), Ensemble NOMD has brought to life many compositions that are rarely performed but are sure to become 20th-and 21th-century classics. True to its name, Ensemble NOMAD is infinitely flexible and spontaneous in programming the concerts, and the regular concerts, now approaching 80, at Tokyo Opera City have become the "events" that cannot be missed in the contemporary music scene in Japan. For its unique programming and high-quality performance, Ensemble NOMAD was awarded the “KEIZO SAJI Prize” in 2003, and “The Vienna Philharmonic and Suntory Music Aid Award” in 2014 from the Suntory Cultural Foundation.
Ensemble NOMAD’s fields of activity is growing rapidly overseas, starting with the invitation to Amsterdam in autumn 2000 to perform at Gaudeamus Week. Since, the ensemble has made appearances in music festivals in Venezuela, Mexico, France, Belgium, Britain, Korea, China, the Netherlands and Estonia, and future invitations include Finland, Germany and Switzerland. In recent years, the ensemble has launched its community engagement programs, in which the ensemble visits schools, nurseries, hospitals and care homes to share the joy of music with those who have limited access to concerts and concert venues.
Ensemble NOMAD’s performance can be heard on CDs. 17CDs have been released of works by leading Japanese composers, Jo Kondo, Hidemi Ishida, Norio Fukushi and Shinichiro Ikebe. Dai Fujikura’s CDs “Turtle Totem”, “Diamond Dust” “Glorious Clouds” also include live recordings. Oversea releases include “Bestiario”, and “Pruebas de vida”, 2 CDs of chamber compositions by a Mexican composer Hebert Vazquez. The original album “Meguru” with a selection of original arrangements was released in May 2014. The latest releases are the “Contemporary Chinese Composers” series from ALM Records which have been selected for the “Recommended Listening” by Asahi Newspaper, and for the “Recommended Albums” by Record Geijutsu Music Magazine.

Jo Kondo 70th Birthday Concert Ensemble

This is the ensemble of fifteen musicians who performed at a concert entitled “Jo Kondo: the Seventy Year Journey, Sen no Ongaku – Present, Past and Future” which took place in the Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall on October 31, 2017 (the organizer has approved the title “Jo Kondo 70th Birthday Concert Ensemble” for use on this CD as the ensemble does not have a set name).
Jo Kondo has consistently used the methodology known as “Sen no Ongaku” (Linear Music) in his compositional work since 1973. The notes and harmonies are sequenced in a timeline, in which a contrast between quivering rhythms and bright timbres is created, thus inviting the listener into a labyrinth of sound. This methodology makes Kondo’s works extremely difficult to play, and therefore that they are not performed as often as their quality and originality should entitle them to be. This concert, which was an attempt to deal with this problem, was organized by an action committee made up of performers, composers and critics, all of whom hold Kondo in the highest esteem. The concert, a collaboration between veterans well-versed in Kondo’s compositions and enthusiastic young musicians, aimed to create a new performance culture for Kondo’s works to ensure that they are passed on to future generations, was acclaimed as ‘a superior performance which highlighted in great detail the link between Kondo’s aesthetic and methodology’.
