Gaku Yamada
Guitarist, performance artist

Gaku Yamada began learning to play the electric guitar when he was in junior high school, aspiring to become like Jimi Hendrix. After going through phases of blues, heavy metal, punk and progressive rock, he studied classical guitar with Norio Sato and Daniel Göritz.
Mainly focusing on contemporary music, Gaku’s friendships with both Japanese and international composers have enabled him to premiere numerous solo pieces, chamber works and concertos and to cultivate a new repertoire for the guitar. In addition to the acoustic and electric guitar, he excels in the field of period instruments such as the nineteenth century guitar, the baroque guitar and lute. He has an exceptionally broad repertoire which transcends the boundaries of any particular period.
In recent years he has branched out into performance art which goes beyond musical instruments, collaborating with dancers and plastic artists on stage works and trying out new approaches to artistic expression.
Gaku has given guest performances in numerous music festivals, such as The Suntory Foundation for Arts Summer Festival, Contemporary Music Seminar “AKIYOSHIDAI’S summer”, Randspiele | Neue Musik in der St.Annen Kirche Zepernick (Berlin), and TOKYO EXPERIMENTAL FESTIVAL etc.
In addition to his work in Japan, he has been invited to give concerts in Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, Malaysia, China, Singapore and Vietnam. His collaboration with Wilhelm Bruck on ‘Salut für Caudwell’ by Helmut Lachenmann in Cologne, Germany, was particularly well received.
He gives lectures and masterclasses at the Tokyo College of Music, the Kunitachi College of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Ghent (Belgium), Peking University (China), LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), SEGi University (Malaysia) and Hanoi Conservatory (Vietnam) et al.
His debut album ‘Ostinati’, released by ALM Records in 2017, garnered a great deal of attention as a striking recording which highlights the possibilities of the guitar. It was selected as a ‘tokusenban’ (editor’s choice) by the Records Geijutsu music magazine and was nominated for the 55th Record Academy Awards.
Gaku won first prize at the “Kyogaku Ⅸ”, the 9th Contemporary Music Performance Competition and the 20th Asahi Contemporary Music Award.
At present he is a part time lecturer at the Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music and at Fukuyama Heisei University.
